What is Reiki?
Lisa Westrick
Often, I describe Reiki to people the first time by using analogies. I first explain Reiki by explaining it is two Japanese words; Rei which means universe and ki which means life force. When combined it means universal life force energy. Science and anatomy books describe our bodies are made up of energy with protons, neutrons, and electrons. Our brain is often described as a super computer which keeps our bodies systems operating and we eat food to have energy for performing various activities in our bodies.

Sometimes I explain how Reiki works by using the analogy of a garden hose. If the hose has a kink in it, the water will not flow. Once the kink is removed the water will flow. In our body an energy blockage will stop the flow of energy to a body part or the entire body. For example, a person who has a tight muscle which results in soreness and this soreness is caused by a block of energy. When the muscle receives Reiki treatment, the blockage is often reduced or removed which then reduces the soreness.

Movies are a useful analogy tool to explain Reiki. Most everyone has seen Star Wars: New Hope in which Obi Wan explains to Luke about the force: it is energy all around us. Yoda also explains to Luke in the Empire Strikes Back; the force is energy that surrounds us and binds us. He encourages Luke to feel the force around him: it is the tree, rock and everything including the land and even his ship. There are more movies which discuss universal energy, but none as famous as the Star Wars movies. Next, I will ask the person if he or she has watched the movie Kung Fu Panda. In the Kung Fu Panda 3 movie, Master Shifu sends energy to a flower and it blooms. Panda asked him what caused the flower to bloom and Master Shifu says it is Chi; the energy that flows through all living things. Chi is the Chinese version of Ki in Japan and Prana for India. Many Eastern medical practices based their treatments on the movement of Chi, Ki or Prana in our bodies. Can I describe Reiki in other ways to people: yes, but relating to movies, which Americans love to watch, makes it easier to understand.
