Reiki and Autism Spectrum Disorders

Can Reiki help people with Autism?

I would first like to define what autism is since it has a very broad definition. First, scientists and doctors referred to it as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). According to the National Autism Society, “ASD is a complex developmental disability; that usually appears in early childhood (by the age of 2) and affects a person’s ability to communicate, and interact with others.” While some people have only a mild version of the disorder and are able to live a full, productive life as an adult, others are completely disabled and may require full-time care and supervision.

Scientists do not know what causes ASD nor is there a cure; however, early diagnosis and access to autistic programs can improve the person’s quality of life. Some of the behaviors associated with autism include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation; difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning; narrow, intense interests; poor motor skills’ and sensory sensitivities. Again, a person on the spectrum might follow many of these behaviors or just a few, or many others besides.

In other words, no two autistic people are the same. I have personal knowledge of this difference because I have two autistic grandsons. One of my grandsons has difficulty with social skills whereas the other has speech issues. Each of the grandkids responds differently when interacting with other people: one is shy and the other loves to talk with everyone.

Prescription drugs can help autistic people; however, the side effects can be harmful for long term usage. Many parents and adult autistic people are looking to complimentary medicine for help. Reiki is one of those healing modalities that can help autistic people.

Many ASD people suffer from stress and anxiety in their daily lives. A Reiki session can reduce the fidgeting and nervous energy to bring a sense of calmness. Another issue many ASD patients have is problems with sleeping and insomnia. Reiki’s calming influence can help ASD people develop healthy sleep patterns and get a good night sleep. A hallmark ASD behavioral issue relates difficulty with social interactions. They have difficulty interacting with family members and friends, and often do not like people touching them. Since Reiki involves gentle touch, it can help the ASD person learn to accept physical touch and improve relationships with others.

In my practice, I have helped people with ASD and Reiki has significantly reduced their anxiety and improved their social interactions.
